When people think about joining a hackathon, they worry about the code. Do I know enough? Can I keep up?
But the real first challenge shows up at the Ideation Session, before any code gets written: walking into a room without knowing what will happen. Will people like your idea? Will someone else pitch something better? Will you find a team, or will a team find you?
These are questions about confidence and belonging, not skill. And they're worth practicing, because you'll face them constantly in your career.
Pitching into the unknown. Sharing an idea before you know how it'll land takes courage, in a hackathon or a staff meeting. Your idea doesn't have to win for the moment to matter. Speaking up is how people notice you're engaged and thoughtful. Not every idea lands, and that's fine: growth comes from participating before you know the outcome, not just from being right.
Knowing when to let go. Ideation isn't only about pitching your own idea, it's also about recognizing when someone else's is worth backing. Choosing to support another person's concept isn't a failure of leadership; it's judgment. You won't always originate the winning idea. Sometimes your best contribution is strengthening someone else's.
Finding your place on a team. Doubts about fit, what do I offer, what if I don't know anyone — are really about one skill: describing your strengths and gaps clearly. "I'm good at keeping projects on schedule." "I want to learn user research." "I have some technical experience but want to work alongside someone." That's the same pitch you'll make joining a new company or team for the rest of your career. (more about this in our next blog)
Confidence comes after, not before. You don't feel ready and then act. You act, nervously, and realize afterward that you handled it. That's the real practice the Ideation Session offers.
You don't need a full project plan or a guaranteed winning idea to show up. You just need to be willing to enter the room and contribute before you know how it'll be received. That's how hackathons start. It's also how careers grow.
