About this event

Want to learn how to build your own website? Already have your own Tumblr/Wordpress/etc site, but want to have more control over it? Interested in learning to program but want to start small? This class is for you!

We will guide you through the basics of HTML and CSS, give you some readily-applicable skills, and answer any questions you may have along the way.

This 4-class HTML/CSS course runs for four Thursdays:

Class 1, HTML Basics: Thursday, June 7 6:30p-8:30p

Class 2, Introduction to CSS: Thursday, June 14 6:30p-8:30p

Class 3, HTML, Beyond the Basics: Thursday, June 21 6:30p-8:30p

Class 4, CSS, Layouts and Formatting: Thursday, June 28 6:30p-8:30p

Due to the restrictions of Meetup's registration, we can't schedule multi-day events, so keep in mind that this Meetup event serves as registration for the entire class.

Please bring/install the following on your computer prior to class:

• Your laptop and charger. Note: A netbook or tablet is NOT a substitute.

• A code editor installed. (We recommend Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/v6.5.3.html) for Windows and SublimeText 2 (http://www.sublimetext.com/2) for Windows or Mac. Both are free.)

• A modern browser with either Chrome (https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/) and the "Web Developer" (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/web-developer/bfbameneiokkgbdmiekhjnmfkcnldhhm)extension or Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/) and Firebug (http://getfirebug.com/) installed.

You can take a sneak peak at the slides** here: http://www.girldevelopit.com/materials . Look for the Introduction to HTML/CSS core curriculum. This series will cover Class 1 through Class 4 materials. **The teacher may customize/update these slides, but the core material will remain the same.

About the teacher:

Megan Dwoskin is a Senior Marketing Manager at Generali Global Assistance, a part of the Fortune 50, multinational Generali Group. For over five years she has built and managed websites for global corporations, the U.S. government, and leading non-profits. Today she leverages her knowledge of coding, web content management, SEO, UX, and marketing strategy to manage and optimize websites for visibility and conversion. In her free time, she enjoys teaching courses for GirlDevelopIt in an effort to support their initiative to encourage more women to grow their technology skills.

The Yards is conveniently located at 700 Pennsylvania Avenue SE DC - a block from Eastern Market station (on the blue and orange line).

Refund Policy: Your payment guarantees your seat in the course. If something changes after registration and you cannot attend the course, your seat is yours to sell or give to someone else - just please let us know who! As a rule we don't offer refunds or credits; Instead your class fee will go toward our chapter fund which we will use to establish a scholarship fund going forward. That said, please do reach out and let us know if you have extenuating circumstances.
