About this event

Want to learn how to build your own website? Already have your own Tumblr/Wordpress/etc site, but want to have more control over it? Interested in learning to program but want to start small? This class is for you!

We will guide you through the basics of HTML and CSS, give you some readily-applicable skills, and answer any questions you may have along the way.

This 4-class HTML/CSS course runs for four Mondays:

Class 1, HTML Basics: Monday, June 9 6:30p-8:30p

Class 2, Introduction to CSS: Monday, June 16 6:30p-8:30p

Class 3, HTML, Beyond the Basics: Monday, June 23 6:30p-8:30p

Class 4, CSS, Layouts and Formatting: Monday, June 30 6:30p-8:30p

Due to the restrictions of Meetup's registration, we can't schedule multi-day events, so keep in mind that this Meetup event serves as registration for the entire class.

About the teacher: 

Ramla Mahmood is a web designer at Vox Media, publisher of SB Nation, The Verge, Polygon, Curbed, Eater, Racked and Vox. Prior to that she worked at the Collaborative Learning Hub at George Mason University where she used to teach into to HTML/CSS and certification programs in Adobe Creative Suite. In her free time, she loves to travel, collect books and learn new things.

Please bring/install the following on your computer prior to class: 

• Your laptop and charger. Note: A netbook or tablet is NOT a substitute.  

• A code editor installed. (We recommend Notepad++ for Windows and SublimeText 2 for Windows or Mac.  Both are free.)

• A modern browser with either Chrome and the "Web Developer"extension or Firefox and Firebug installed.

You can take a sneak peak at the slides** here:  http://www.girldevelopit.com/materials. Look for the Introduction to HTML/CSS core curriculum.  This series will cover Class 1 through Class 4 materials.  **The teacher may customize/update these slides, but the core material will remain the same. 

Disruption Corporation is generously providing space at their Crystal Tech Fund offices in Crystal City for our classes!  

Tortoise & Hare will be providing food and drinks for classes!  We also invite you to join us post-class for a drink at their nearby restaurant, about 3 blocks from class.  

Parking:

There's an underground parking garage at the intersection of Crystal Dr. and 23rd St. - you can park there (follow signs to bldg 2231).  Alternately, you can take the metro to the Crystal City metro station on yellow/blue lines.  The office is only a couple short blocks away.  

Refund Policy: Your payment guarantees your seat in the course. If something changes after registration and you cannot attend the course, your seat is yours to sell or give to someone else - just please let us know who!  As a rule we don't offer refunds or credits;  Instead your class fee will go toward our chapter fund which we will use to establish a scholarship fund going forward.   That said, please do reach out and let us know if you have extenuating circumstances.
