About this event

JavaScript is a the language of interactivity on the web.  Ever used Google maps? Clicked on something to make it appear or hide?  Seen a slideshow of images? You have used JavaScript!

Learn how to add interactivity and other features to your sites!  Because JavaScript interacts with HTML elements, we suggest having a working knowledge of basic HTML as a prerequisite for this course.  If you already know some HTML or have taken our Intro to HTML/CSS classes, JavaScript is a great next step!  (Don't know HTML? Our Beginner HTML/CSS series is being offered in June!)

This 2-class JavaScript course runs for two Thursdays:

Class 1, Introduction to JavaScript: Thursday, July 17 6:30p-8:30p

Class 2, Functions, Arrays, Loops, & Objects: Thursday, July 24 6:30p-8:30p

Due to the restrictions of Meetup's registration, we can't schedule multi-day events, so keep in mind that this Meetup event serves as registration for both classes.

About the teacher:

Kate Green is a web developer at the Chronicle of Higher Education. She got her start on the web in 1998 when a friend gave her a 15 minute crash course in HTML. She stood up her first server the next year and has worked on the web since. In the interim she learned CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and now Ruby. Today she leads front end development for chronicle.com and philanthropy.com, where she did the look and feel for the new responsive sites and has introduced automated testing and code quality to the front end code base. Outside of work she runs, gardens, and runs her dog in agility.

Please bring/install the following on your computer prior to class:

• Your laptop and charger. Note: A netbook or tablet is NOT a substitute.

• A code editor installed. (We recommend <a href="http://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/v6.5.3.html">Notepad++ for Windows and SublimeText 2 for Windows or Mac.  Both are free.)

• A modern browser with either Chrome and the "Web Developer"extension or Firefox and Firebug installed.

You can take a sneak peak at the slides here: http://www.girldevelopit.com/materials. Look for the Javascript/jQuery core curriculum. This series will cover the material in Class 1 and Class 2.  The instructor may customize the curriculum to her teaching style so that these are not the exact slides used in class, but the core material shown in these slides will be covered.

Disruption Corporation is generously providing space at their Crystal Tech Fund offices in Crystal City for our classes!

Parking:

There's an underground parking garage at the intersection of Crystal Dr. and 23rd St. - you can park there (follow signs to bldg 2231).  Alternately, you can take the metro to the Crystal City metro station on yellow/blue lines.  The office is only a couple short blocks away.

Refund Policy: Your payment guarantees your seat in the course. If something changes after registration and you cannot attend the course, your seat is yours to sell or give to someone else - just please let us know who!  As a rule we don't offer refunds or credits;  Instead your class fee will go toward our chapter fund which we will use to establish a scholarship fund going forward.   That said, please do reach out and let us know if you have extenuating circumstances.
