Whether you need public speaking practice for an upcoming presentation or tech talk, want to improve your skills as a teacher or want to become a more confident public speaker in general - this workshop is for you. Our goal is to help participants become more confident and effective communicators by providing practical exercises, speaking opportunities, instructions, and individual feedback.
The course consists of a series of individual workshops; every workshop focuses on a different skill. You can take as many or as few classes as you want.
The Skill of the Day: "Pauses".
The Topic of the Day: Let's have some serious fun this time :) Our topic of the day is humor and our goal to tell a funny story. The challenge here is to hold the pause at moments when the audience laughs to let your audience to absorb the joke and enjoy it. In preparation for the workshop and as an inspiration, try to find funny speeches performed by comedians and/or other speakers. Watch specifically for how they stop after the joke and let you have fun with it.
Here is an example, James Veitch: This is what happens when you reply to spam email.
To provide a quality speaking time for every participant, every session is limited to 15 people (unless specified otherwise).
How it works:
Following specific instructions at the beginning of every class, half of the participants, assigned a role of speakers, will deliver a prepared speech on the Topic of the Day or on the topic of their choosing, about 4 min long. The other half of the participants will play a role of speech evaluators and deliver an oral evaluation of presentations of assigned to them speakers, about 2-3 min long.
Speaking is not the only component of effective communication. Listening is another crucial part of it, so prepare not only to speak but also to listen and provide either oral or written feedback at every session.
Please pick your preference as either a Speaker or Evaluator when you RSVP. We will take this into account but we may ask you to be flexible with your role to ensure an equal number of both during the workshop.
Expectations to participants:
1. Teamwork and participation of everybody who has signed up are very important. If you register for a session and can't come, let us know as soon as possible so we can transfer your spot to somebody else.
2. Be respectful and supportive of others in the group. Remember, all of us, including you, will be stepping out of our comfort zone sooner or later - it's the whole point of the workshop. We are here to help one another make this all important step.
There are no refunds or make-ups for this course. If you end up being unable to attend any or all of these dates, the entire amount of your tuition will be donated to our scholarship fund to help other women who need financial assistance. Thank you for understanding.
