About this event

Join us for 2 hour workshop that will help you get started and involved in the open source community! We would love to encourage more of our members to become open source committers and contributors; come find out more information on how to get involved.

About the Workshop

Some of the things we'll cover:

• What is open source? What is the open source "philosophy?" Open source licenses and licensing (what are they and what do they mean).

• Overview of tools project built as open source - you're probably already using or have heard of at least one.

• Brief overview of Git / Github, and other tools used to make open source stuff. PREREQUISITE: you should have an active GitHub account.

• 5 ways that you can participate in an open source project right now

Joining a project: Know enough about open source, have a GitHub account and ready to get started contributing to a project? In a separate area from the workshop, others who are already working on open source projects will be there to share information on the projects and help get you involved.  Participants will leave with clear goals and next steps for their work in open source.

All Girl Develop It events follow a Code of Conduct.

Light snacks will be provided for the event.

About the Instructor

Courteney Ervin is an Events Platform Engineer at CodeMontage. The confluence of open source and social good were the seed of her tech career, and she is thrilled to be writing code at the junction of such important movements. As a self-taught developer, Ervin is also firmly committed to fostering a more diverse tech industry through accessible educational opportunities and supports this commitment with her work on the CodeLift Project, an organization that teaches HTML & CSS to women of color.

Previously, Ervin taught over 100 students as a founding teacher of Dev Bootcamp’s NYC campus and has led events and tech projects at a variety of nonprofits.
