About this event

Want to learn how to build your own website? Already have your own site and want to have more control over it? Interested in learning to program but want to start small? If you answered yes to any of the questions above, this course is for you!

CSS is an incredibly useful skill for bloggers, content creators, email marketers, small business owners, designers; it is absolutely necessary for front-end web developers.

In this workshop, you'll learn CSS, the languages used by the billions of webpages out there today to style content. The comprehensive workshop will be a mix of lectures, pair programming, and hands-on exercises building your webpage.

By the end of this workshop, you will know how to style web pages using CSS (e.g. a bold blog title, italicized date of entry, the blog content in a cool font, and icons for your blog).

Attendees should be comfortable with HTML tags and attributes.

• Your laptop (Mac, PC, Linux) and charger
• A modern web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari)
• A text editor - we recommend either Sublime Text 2 or Atom (both free)

If you do not have a laptop, please contact the instructors. We have a limited number of Chromebooks for students to borrow.

Payment is required to attend. If you'd like to attend but cannot afford the cost, click here to request a scholarship ( Due to the number of applications, only the scholarship recipient will receive an email a few days before the workshop. Thank you for your understanding!

Kelly Tran is a software engineer turned product manager turned software engineer (again). In her free time, she volunteers as a Chapter Leader for Girl Develop It. She loves organization (a lot) and obsessively organizes all aspects of her life. She is a huge fan of containers (both virtual and physical), and adamantly believes that things belong in other things. Fittingly, her favorite HTML tag is the div, and her favorite store is The Container Store.

Truc Nguyen is an engineer by training turned generalist designer who works collaboratively with stakeholders to explore, design, and develop pragmatic solutions to business problems. She is a Product Designer with a technical bent at AppDynamics. She's passionate about greenfield development - building something new and creating better processes. At GDI, her favorite part of teaching is seeing students progress over time! Outside of work Truc enjoys being active - and had a brief stint as group fitness instructor - and also loves baking, cats, and empowering women.
