About this event

The command line is a powerful yet often avoided tool for beginning developers. We're here to show you that it's easier than you might think, and even fun!

This course will cover basics of directory and file traversal, finding and searching for files and content, and using many of the powerful tools that come along with most Unix Shells.

After this workshop, the next time you encounter a terminal prompt, you'll be ready to respond with confidence.

Topics covered:
• Command line "lingo"
• Working in directories from the command line including finding the current folder you're in, listing all folders in your directory, making new folders and removing folders.
• Working with files from the command line including printing the contents of a file, making new files and removing files.
• Accessing previously used commands in history.
• Examples of real-world use of the command line and how it can be a powerful daily tool in development.

TECH REQUIREMENTS

• Your laptop (Mac, PC, Linux) and charger
• A modern web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari)
• If your computer is using Windows, please download and install Git (https://git-scm.com/download/win) before class. (We won't be using Git, but the installer includes a terminal that runs commands in the same way we'll be demonstrating.)

If you do not have a laptop, please contact the instructors. We have a limited number of Chromebooks for students to borrow.

ABOUT THE TEACHERS

Jessica Parsons has spent half her life teaching, and a quarter of it developing for the web. She decided to combine these passions and teach web development with Girl Develop It. During the day, she is a Documentation Engineer at Netlify. Outside of work, she enjoys decorating wedding cakes, sewing clothing, fixing anything, and hiking with her partner and their two shibas, Petunia and Monty.

Claire Bendersky strives to strengthen and elevate her community through hands on education. She is a software engineer and educator who has taught and designed curriculum for over ten years. Prior to diving into the world of tech, she was a scientist studying the Earth's mantle and conditions early on in our Solar System's history.
