About this event

Learn how we can write code that helps to remove barriers that exclude people with disabilities from accessing and engaging with web content.

Lectures will provide an overview of how people with a varied range of disabilities use and access content on the Web.

Exercises will take students through the process of modifying existing code to make site content and functionality more accessible to people with varying abilities.

All topics are mapped to one or more of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines as appropriate.


• Basic HTML


• Your laptop, charger, and headphones
• Optionally, you may also wish to bring a mobile device such as phone or tablet
• A modern web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari)

If you do not have a laptop, please contact the instructors. We have a limited number of Chromebooks for students to borrow.

Christina Foran is a software engineer and former math teacher passionate about developing technology that personalizes learning and makes knowledge more accessible for all kinds of learners. Her first software engineering position was at Slack where she worked on features like message threading and notifications. Most recently, she joined an adult literacy startup where she consulted on security, accessibility, and international texting.

Carol Scott is a full-stack JavaScript developer who believes that accessible websites make the web better for absolutely everyone. A former journalist, she has written for newspapers in Florida, Virginia and Ohio, and now uses her investigative and communication skills to drill deeply into code, architecture and documentation. She was the solo developer for, an industry scheduling tool used by 16 organizations. When she’s not coding, you’ll find her leading San Francisco literary cocktail tours at
