This workshop is for beginners who want to learn about WordPress, a very popular content management system, used for websites and blogs. By the end of the workshop you will know how to set up, build and manage a WordPress website.
Note that this is the very first time we are teaching this workshop so it is at a discounted rate. We'll be asking for feedback at the end so that we can improve it for next time.
This workshop will be taught by Layla Mandella, a local front-end web developer. If you are interested in helping out as a teaching assistant, please let us know.
We'll start at 11:15am with introductions and making sure we all have WordPress installed and ready to go. We'll eat lunch around noon and then afterwards will go into lectures and hands-on exercises.
In this beginner's workshop we'll cover: installing WP, the administration and management of your WP site, managing comments, spam, security, widgets, menus, finding and installing themes and plugins, bulk editing of pages/posts and we'll also go over the customization of themes.
Prerequisites:
You do not need any prior experience with WordPress to attend. A basic understanding of HTML/CSS and FTP is helpful, but it is not necessary! If you can, come to class with either a WordPress compatible hosting account (such as Bluehost - $4.95/month) or have WordPress installed locally. WPEngine is another reputable host and offers GDI students 1 month of free hosting, after that hosting costs $29/month. If you do not have WordPress installed locally or don't have a hosted WP site, we can provide you a temporary setup to use during the workshop.
Thank you to StartupHouse for the great location!
If you'd like to attend but cannot afford the cost, please request a GDI scholarship.
Please note that we cannot issue refunds, since there's an overhead to issuing refunds via Meetup.com and we already offer the workshops at such a low-cost. We put proceeds into the chapter fund, which we use as our scholarship fund.
