Support our Scholarship Program!

GDI rejects the stereotypes that women and non-binary individuals aren’t interested in technology and that people can’t learn tech as adults. GDI chooses to focus on affordable education services for adults who might otherwise be unable to access tech classes, letting them know it’s never too late for them to learn. We are raising $7,200 before May to provide 10 more scholarships in 2023. Please make a donation today and support our scholarships.

About this event

Have you ever wanted to learn Git, but using the terminal (the command line) isn’t your thing? Or maybe you do have some Git experience, but understanding the workflow–what Git actually does behind the scenes–is still unclear? Do you prefer learning or working visually? Then this workshop is for you!

We get it—the command line isn’t for everyone. And Git commands? Sometimes confusing! How is cloning different from forking? Should I git pull or git fetch? Luckily, there are visual GUI (graphical user interface) tools that are easier and more intuitive to use for version control than the traditional terminal.

In this workshop, you’ll be introduced to Github Desktop, a GUI tool that provides a visual representation of Git and Github locally on your computer—no terminal or web browser involved. You’ll learn how to create repositories, keep track of code changes, share and collaborate with others, and more—all done visually! Get ready to learn Git in an easier way!

Additional topics in the workshop will include:

  • Working with Existing Repositories
  • Cloning and Forking Repositories
  • Committing Code
  • Making Pull Requests
  • Integrating Github Desktop with Visual Studio Code
  • And more
