Mentor Information Session

Virtual Hackathon
Wed, Oct 27, 7:30 PM (EDT)

About this event

Want to help out at a newbie-friendly virtual hackathon? Girl Develop It is organizing a virtual hackathon November 10-12 for people who are new to coding!

You must attend this orientation session to participate as a mentor.

What do mentors do?

Mentors encourage, rally, and support our wonderful teams to create fun and unique software project.

You can either be a dedicated team mentor, assigned to a team for the entire hackathon, or you can be a floating mentor.

Dedicated Team Mentors commit to working with a single team from start to finish. You support your team and cheer them on throughout the whole hackathon process including:

  1. Brainstorming the idea
  2. Defining executable scope
  3. Designing the tech stack
  4. Dividing and assigning tasks
  5. Coordinating version control
  6. Debugging
  7. Pitching

The expectation is that you will be available in your dedicated team room at times that you agree on with the team members.

Floating Mentors commit to 3 hour shifts to host our Help Desk breakout rooms and field questions in Slack such as:

  • I got to this git merge screen. Now what?
  • Can you help me understand this JavaScript Console error?
  • Where do I put this API key?

Be available with notifications on for Slack during your assigned time.

Be a speaker!

Propose a newbie-friendly hackathon talk that can help teams succeed in building their projects, or volunteer to present at one of our pre-hackathon events!

Propose a topic here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfe-aZczzxs0Dx-6a3h_Dbrwqq53zup5B7oP74AAq4JFvAiYg/viewform

Not a code mentor, but want to help out?

We also need volunteers to help with registration, stage management, setup, communication, marketing, and more! Email brenda@girldevelopit.com to discuss!
