What is Open Source Software (OSS) and why do we need it? Open source software is code that is designed to be publicly accessible; anyone can see, modify, and distribute the code as they see fit. Fun, right?

This chapter will introduce you to OSS, how to access, and apply real, hands-on opportunities to use OSS in building a platform for a national nonprofit. Events in this chapter will include panel discussions about OSS, workshops on how to use Git and Github to access software, and connect you with teams of people you will be matched with to build frameworks for the site. You will leave these events with more knowledge, a robust community, and a stake in a live website that you helped build.
