About this event

Join us as we host the first-ever GDI Virtual Hackathon. We are excited to welcome you to this unique series of learning, “hacking” and collaborating with the GDI community members from across the globe.

What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is an event in which programmers, graphic designers, content strategists, interface designers, and project managers collaborate intensively on projects.

Or as we like to call it: an event where people work together to find new (sometimes inelegant) solutions to a problem.

Who should attend?

If you’ve ever taken a GDI class, dove into an online tech tutorial, or any other coding class or event this is a great opportunity to take the skills you’ve learned and apply them to a collaborative project working with like-minded individuals.

Even if you haven’t attended any of these events or participated in these groups, you’re still totally welcome! Beginners and the tech-curious are especially encouraged to attend, as are experienced technologists who are interested in sharing their knowledge and skills while working on projects that they are passionate about.

What will this event look like?

This event will kick off with a series of pre-Hackathon events including:

  • Hackathon Info Session
  • Networking & Team Building
  • Uploading & Tools Office Hours

The event will then kick off on Wednesday Nov. 10th and run through Friday Nov. 12.  The hackathon will include:

  • Presentation & workshops
  • Lightning talks
  • Skills workshops
  • Career networking
  • Office hours
  • Team Work time
  • Solutions presentation (and AWARDS!!)

How to attend?

We have two registration options:

  • Attendee:  Join us for some or all of the event - but sign up to receive all the details and opportunities.
  • Mentor:  Support our teams, workshops and events. We have lots of option to engage as a mentor that are designed to fit your schedule. Mentors are required to attend a brief information session on October 27th.

What do you need to participate?

No much.. just an interest to learn, create and engage with our community.   Our basic requirement are a computer with the option to join a video conference.   We will be hosting an information session a week before the event to answer questions and make sure you are comfortable with the event.  We will also be hosting:

Interested in doing more?

We are looking for Sponsors to help support the event and provide prizes to our teams.  We are also looking for mentors to support our teams.  Register for our mentor information session if your are interested.
